The World of Little People
On Wednesday, my class and the other 5th graders of Draper went on a field trip. We had the opportunity to go to BizTown at the Gateway. It was such a fun and exhausting day. For the past few months, we've been teaching our kids about balancing check books, good business qualities, marketing, different business positions and being good citizens in our community. The kids had to interview for jobs and write ads to market their companies. It was fun listening to them coming up with jingles for their businesses. On Wed. it all came together. The kids were put to work running the city of BIzTown. We had a mayor who gave a speech, CEOs who ran the businesses, CFOs that wrote out checks and made deposits, and all the other necessary employees to make a city work. They got 2 paychecks for the day, could do TV commercials, had to open savings accounts at the bank, had to pay bills to other companies, etc. It was such a great experience! At the end of the day most of the kids were exhausted. Some of them had even passed on their second break because they had too much work to do. The kids learned lots about the business world. Despite the hard hard work, they had a blast. As a teacher, it was fun seeing my little people in a world they will someday be in charge of.

That is adorable! I want to go do it myself! That sounds so fun! I would have loved that in 5th grade.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a great experience for them. I wish all schools did that, because kids really need to understand what the world is like. How fun!
ReplyDeleteWhat a good idea. I think that experience is worth a few math lessons. I'll have to show Jon this. He would love to do something like this.
